The external area of this Northbridge home was designed to maximise the benefits of Perth’s contemporary living and intimate, relaxed lifestyle. The compact yet versatile space was designed by Blake Willis Landscape Architects and built by eScape Landscape Architecture and Construction.
Blake's clients wanted an area allowing them to engage with their community and interact with the goings-on around them. The desire for a connection with the surrounding environment needed to be balanced by appropriate security. Perceived privacy is achieved with careful height relationships between bench, planters and planting, with subtle lighting, all of which limits visual penetration into the space in the evening, but allows for permeable views outward.
Elements like the floating stone clad bench and timber bench were used to reinforce the horizontal lines of the garden and provide usable space. A series of weathering steel planters were used to create structure to the garden and maximise space. Selected feature planting was used in various ways to screen and create visual interest from the new café doors, which open onto a timber landing. Integrated plants that have uses beyond the aesthetic are a feature with traditional herbs and leaf crops forming a textural planting.
"The fusion of function and form creates a practical yet attractive space that is perfect for sophisticated, yet low-maintenance, inner-city living."
